Cruel Beauty

Cruel Beauty - Rosamund Hodge *3.75*

Woah, what a twisted, dark, crazy book!

This is different than any book I have ever read. Especially in the YA genre. It is much darker than most. I'm not sure how much it aligns with Beauty and the Beast, but it isn't too similar from what I can remember.

Our main character, Nyx, is very interesting. She has a wicked side to her soul, and is not the "pure-hearted" heroine we are used to. I could understand how some people may find her annoying, but I think she is supposed to be. She is in a messed up situation. Her father is willingly giving her over to a monster because of a bargain he made long ago. Her secret is that she is going to kill this "Gentle Lord" in order to save her world. She is conflicted for most of the novel, trying to decide how to kill him and if she even wants to. This makes for a tumultuous plot.

This is where the romance comes in, I'm not going to get into it too much. I just want to say I found it very intriguing, but it was hard to let myself get fully enthralled with it. Since Nyx is constantly trying to decide if she should kill this monster, I never knew when she was going to change her mind.

The monster, or the "Gentle Lord", is my favorite character of the book. I found him to be the most interesting and loved the scenes where he was involved.

I also loved the castle. It almost reminded me of Alice and Wonderland. There are hundreds of doors that lead to who knows where, and the castle is constantly changing. It definitely messes with your mind.

I can't give this book a higher rating though because of the world and the end. It is so confusing I cannot even explain it to you. It mixes mythology with weird demons and almost fantasy. It's very unique and interesting. I think it has a lot of potential. It just went over my head at some points and I was thoroughly confused, especially at the end.

I really don't even understand how this book ended or what happened. I'm just very confused on that aspect.

This book has a lot of twists, mystery and betrayal. I read it in one day, so obviously I found it hard to put down. I was very entertained by the plot and found it to be unpredictable.

Overall, I would recommend this book if you are looking for something uniquely sinister, dark, and almost scary at times. This book will twist your mind and give you goosebumps.
I just wish it had a better explained world and maybe a slightly different ending.

Thank you to Edelweiss and Balzer+Bray for allowing me to read this early in return for an honest review. My opinions are my own.
